Trams may return to Chandni Chowk

NEW DELHI: Chandni Chowk may soon welcome back the trams that disappeared from the area around the 1960s. Lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung has given an in-principle approval for the project, which the public works department will soon forward to UTTIPEC for clearance.

The project is part of the Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan where 50% of the road from Subhash Marg to Fatehpuri Masjid will be used for pedestrians while the other will be used for non-motorized vehicles (NMV). Principal secretary, PWD, Arun Baroka, said, "This is not an entirely new project since the concept of NMV already existed in the plans for Chandni Chowk's redevelopment. The code of conduct, that will be implemented any time now, will not affect the project since we would only not be able to award work till it is on. However, it will take us at least two to three months to get everything in place by which time the code of conduct would have been removed."

Sources said that DMRC would be roped in for implementation of project.
