NEW DELHI: Since the general election was announced, CISF has seized nearly 40kg of gold from IGI airport. Searches have also yielded lakhs of rupees in cash, senior officials said. The gold and the cash have been sent for verification. Sources at the I-T department said it would take more than a month to identify the source of the seized items.

Senior officials said checks at the airport were intensified after the poll code came into force on March 5. Since then the volume of gold seized is far greater than what is usual. The gold is estimated to be worth Rs 10.6 crore in the international market.

"We generally don't focus on seizing smuggled gold or contraband as they don't pose a security threat. But since the poll code kicked in, detecting gold and cash with passengers has become a priority and will remain so for another month," said a senior CISF official. According to the official, most of the hauls were from people claiming to be businessmen.

"Most passengers were in possession of more than the 1 kilo of gold allowed by the election commission. Beyond this limit, declarations have to be made. Since financial investigation is not a part of our brief, we could not verify the claims," said a senior CISF official.

The customs department has recovered over 75kg of gold during this period.
