The intention of the informant is not known but the election watchdog is certainly going to use this piece of information and tally it with the party's election expenditure when it files the details later, sources said.
Another problem the commission is facing is that it is not empowered to ask a political party to furnish details of its expenditure during electioneering. Parties at present are filing their expenditure details only after 90 days of the parliamentary elections and 75 days in case of assembly polls. Though there is limit for expenditure of a candidate in elections, there is no such limit for parties.
The expenditure observers deployed by the EC and Income Tax investigation units are also gathering intelligence on the money being used in campaign. There are special flying squads of the EC and I-T officials who are constantly on the move to seize any movement of unaccounted cash.
In a similar action, a joint team of the EC and I-T had three days ago seized Rs 3.99 crore from a vehicle going from Delhi to Muzaffarnagar. Sources said the money was certainly going for distribution in Muzaffarnagar area, but the source has not yet been identified.
On Thursday, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma had alleged that BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi has spent Rs 10,000 crore in the current polls. He had alleged that 90% of this amount was black money.
Modi has, however, rejected these allegations. Modi told a TV channel any government agency could probe these claims.
"Rs 10,000 crore is a big amount. The government has all the agencies. They should ask whose money is this. From where did it come and where was it spent," Modi replied.
