After mild weekend, more rain in Delhi

NEW DELHI: After a pleasant weekend, Delhiites can expect more mild weather in the next few days. The Met office says the capital could get the odd thundershower till Wednesday which would help keep temperatures well below normal.

Thanks to showers the previous day, the maximum temperature on Sunday was a pleasant 35.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, while the minimum was two degrees below normal at 23.5.

R K Jenamani, director in-charge, IGI Met said there is high possibility of thunderstorms between May 12 and 14 due to moisture-laden winds coming in from the east. Against a monthly normal of 22.7mm, Delhi has recorded 21.3mm of rain in the first 11 days on May, with more rain expected in the coming few days.

Although Safdarjung recorded just 0.4mm rain in the 24 hours till 8.30am on Sunday, it was wetter in other areas such as Gurgaon (19mm).

R K Jenamani, director in-charge, IGI Met said the wet spell in the capital was related to a western disturbance. "A WD exists as an upper air cyclonic circulation over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining Pakistan. It is expected to affect the western Himalayan region till Wednesday. It is due to this WD that moisture laden winds are blowing from the easterly direction. These have the potential of causing thunderstorms over this region," said a Met official.

This month, three severe thunderstorms have been recorded at the IGI Airport. Jenamani said on May 5, 8 and 10, thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds had hit the area between 5.30pm and 11pm.

"These have been accompanied by some rainfall and strong gusty winds which have also brought down the temperature. This is normal with thunderstorms associated with summer. On May 8, wind speeds touched 95 kmph while Saturday saw speeds around 90 kmph. At the IGI Airport, this led to visibility falling from 800m to 400m," Jenamani said.

"The moisture from easterly winds is feeding any local system that forms due to heating through the day, which has led to the squall-like phenomenon," he added.

Met officials have said that a fall in maximum temperatures is expected over northwest and east India over the next two days.
