‘Hyatt didn’t enforce some safety norms’

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has told the Delhi high court that "certain conditions" required for the safety of visitors were "not complied with" at Hyatt Regency Hotel where a young CEO of a real estate group fell from an under-construction ledge connected to the sixth-floor lobby of the hotel to the fourth floor six months ago.

"During investigation, it has been noticed that the terrace where Gaurav Rishi and his two friends went out to smoke, was not a properly-designated smoking area. It was also observed that certain conditions required for the safety and security of visitors/guests—that they should not be allowed to loiter and that the exit gate should have been properly guarded—were not complied with," stated a status report recently submitted by DCP B S Jaiswal before the court.

On Tuesday, Delhi police supplied a supplementary status report to the victim's family on the basis of which the petitioner told HC that the licence of Hyatt Regency be not renewed as there were "serious violations" of safety norms by the hotel as per the supplementary status.

The submission was made before Justice Manmohan by the family of Gaurav Rishi who had sustained grievous injuries due to the fall and is still in a coma.

Some action needs to be taken. The licences (of Hyatt) ought not to be renewed," advocate Sandeep Sethi said. Justice Manmohan asked the police to file a supplementary status report within a week and listed the matter for further hearing on August 21.
