When it comes to obeying traffic rules, children might be the most disciplined people. We're not the ones to say it - the jury members, Amol Palekar, actor and director, Shoojit Sircar, director, Sanjana Kapoor, theatre artiste and Rohit Baluja, president, Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE), said so at this event held in Delhi recently. At the PVR Nest - Michelin India CineArt Steer to Safety Program, short films on road safety made by school children, were showcased. Shayama Chona, educationist and social activist, was the guest of honour at the event, while director Shyam Benegal was the chief guest. Nitin Sood, chief financial officer, PVR, was also present at the occasion.

Tu jaanta nahi mera baap kaun hai Students from various schools across NCR presented their short films on road safety. These films dealt with the consequences of drunken driving, overspeeding and driving without wearing seat belts or riding without a helmet. The play in which students depicted the consequences of drunken driving was applauded by the audience. The play was not only about the consequences, but also about the 'tu jaanta nahi mera baap kaun hai' attitude that people in NCR throw around.
Think, learn and do Chona said, "Every single morning, when you see the newspapers, you read about road accidents. Lately, the news of the death of Pankaj Gupta and his daughter in Gurgaon, due to rash and negligent driving by a bus driver, made it to the news. What can be said, what can be done, have all been depicted in the short films made by these children. Unhone kaha belt pehno, main kehti hoon helmet pehno, lekin sabse pehle open your minds. Sochiye, seekhiye, kariye." Appreciating the work done by children, Benegal said, "Being here's been wonderful. I think this initiative is marvellous, and I hope not only does it continue, but grow too, and cover many children in the country. To me, it's more important to encourage the children to express themselves creatively than anything else."

We can make a difference Sanjana Kapur, one of the jury members, said, "They (the short films) were very inspirational. I was curious when I was invited here, because I'm always curious to see what kids can create. This is just wonderful. Today's all about actually enlightening us, reminding us of our foolishness, and also to remind us of the strength to say that we can make a difference. In five years' time, I can cycle easily in the city - and I won't be banged into - because of these children."

Will we ever say 'Driver, gaadi dheere chalao' Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar talked about the typical habit of people to ask the driver to drive faster. He said, "When you go to get a license, I think all these (whatever has been shown through the short films) are given to you in a booklet. And you are also told what not to do. As soon as we're out of our offices, we forget all about road rules. Also, because we've become so impatient, we can't tolerate being delayed by a single minute. Life is really fast, and probably that's why we always tell our drivers, 'jaldi chalo'. I hope after seeing these films, something changes. If we can ask our drivers to slow down a little, it would save a lot of lives." Amol Palekar announced the winners.
