NEW DELHI: With the arrest of a 19-year-old engineering aspirant and recovery of 10 pistols from him, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang which used to smuggle illegal arms from Madhya Pradesh and sell them to criminal elements in Delhi and NCR.

The accused identified as Ajay Alawa (19), a resident of Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh was arrested on Saturday following a tip off.

"We have recovered 10 semi-automatic sophisticated pistols of 7.65mm along with five extra magazines from him," said deputy commissioner of police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

During interrogation, Alawa revealed that he has been working for Tanman Singh, a notorious arms supplier of Barwani, MP.

Investigation revealed that the accused had earlier supplied consignment of illegal weapons previously in Agra, Mathura, Meerut and Delhi. He is studying in class 12th and is preparing for engineering entrance, police said.

For this purpose, he was living on rent at Dharampuri along with his other school friends where he came in contact with Tanman Singh. Due to poverty and to earn easy money, Ajay was lured into this illegal trade. He was paid Rs 3,000 for each delivery.

An in-house study into the growing use of sophisticated firearms over last few years revealed that in most of the cases, illegal weapons used in commission of various crime in Delhi, were manufactured and supplied from Barwani, MP and Munger, Bihar and later smuggled into Delhi and NCR, police said.

According to police, on Saturday, specific input was received that a large consignment of illegal weapons would exchange hands near Sarai Kale Khan ISBT, New Delhi following which a trap was laid.

"Around 9.40pm, a suspicious young boy holding a traveling bag was spotted below flyover, Sarai Kale Khan waiting for someone. Police team detained him and questioned him during which he revealed his name as Ajay Alawa. Total 10 pistols with five spare magazines were recovered from him," said Yadav.

Accordingly, a case under Arms Act was registered at Special Cell police station and Alawa was arrested. Efforts are being made to identify and arrest Tanman Singh, the main supplier. Further investigation is in progress, police said.
