After a spell of rain between Monday and Tuesday, the city's maximum temperature plummeted nine degrees below normal to settle at 30.6 degrees Celsius, possibly the coolest day in May in at least the past five years. In some areas, the maximum did not even cross 30 degrees. Palam was the warmest with a maximum of 31.2 degrees Celsius while Pusa recorded the lowest maximum of 28.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum ranged between 19.8 degrees Celsius at Pusa to a cold 16.4 degrees Celsius at Ridge. Till 8.30am on Tuesday, the 24 hour rainfall at the Safdarjung observatory was 9.7mm.
Against a normal rainfall of 22.7mm for May, Delhi has already recorded 31.7mm rain. The last time that May recorded such weather was in 2008 when the city recorded 165mm rain.
"The rainfall has been a result of an active western disturbance which has also led to the formation of a cyclonic circulation which, on Tuesday, was over Haryana and neighbouring areas. It will move eastwards by Wednesday. The frequency of WDs over northwest India has been abnormal. While it is not unheard of, it is quite unusual to see them impact north India like this. Another WD is approaching the western Himalayan region and is likely to affect it from May 17. This may bring more rain to the hills and to parts of the northwest plains from May 18," said a Met official.
