35 kids narrowly escape playschool blaze in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A major tragedy was averted on Tuesday after a fire at an electronic store in Shadipur, west Delhi, spread to a playschool next to it. Thirty-five kids, who were part of a summer camp, had left minutes before the fire engulfed the school, which faces the Metro station.

A few teachers and three other children, including the grandson of the playschool owner, were attending daycare at the time. They were alerted by the locals who saw smoke emanating from the building.

The fire had broken out in the warehouse of "Vijay Sales" - building number M-41-which is in the basement. The shop is on the ground floor, while the first floor has an educational institute. The adjacent building houses the school, Natkhat.

"We received an alert around 1.01pm. By the time we reached, the storeroom had been gutted and the school, which is on the ground floor was in flames," said a fire officer. It took 14 fire tenders nearly three hours to control the blaze. The owner, Harinder Singh, who lives with his family on the second floor, said the toddlers had left when the school caught fire. He said the camp was over around 12.30pm, while the fire was reported around 12.40pm. "The remaining three kids and teachers escaped through the back gate," said Singh. Locals added that a blast in an airconditioner on the second floor of the shop seemed to be the trigger.

The furniture and papers inside the playschool burned quickly.

"The children inside were frightened. We are counselling them to deal with the trauma," said a teacher.

Fire officers said the school did not have proper fire-safety equipment. If the locals had not sounded the alarm, there could have been a tragedy.

"There are three doors to exit the building but none has a clear passage for a group of 35-40 children. There was also a kitchen on the floor with a gas cylinder which could have exploded," said a fire officer. Firemen suspect a short circuit in an AC at the electronic shop caused the fire, which was fed by the paper cartons and plastic goods stored inside.
