NEW DELHI: State Congress leaders lashed out on Saturday at the municipal corporations, BJP and AAP at a protest meet against a proposed eight-acre landfill in Maidan Garhi village in south Delhi. State Congress chief and former minister in Delhi government Arvinder Singh alleged that projects launched by the Sheila Dikshit government have been stalled for the past nine months.

"Work in unauthorized colonies is pending at the stage it was when we stepped down. There is no water and electricity. We will resist this landfill proposal along with you," Singh said. The landfill has been planned near Indira Gandhi National Open University campus.

Earlier, village elder Natthu Singh handed over a memorandum to the leaders Singh, Sajjan Kumar and party spokesperson Mukesh Sharma, urging them to support locals in their fight against the proposal.

Kumar warned people about the problems the landfill will create for them if made operational. "It will not only pollute the environment but will also contaminate the water. Even remains of dead animals will be thrown here," the former MP said. Kumar used the meeting to pitch the works of the UPA2 government referring to the Land Acquisition Bill 2013 and saying that it was brought in to protect them from "private colonizers".

Residents have strongly opposed locating the landfill at the proposed site. "What is the logic of dumping the garbage of the city in our village? Why should we bear the burden alone? This is not fair. It will cause various problems including air pollution and water contamination," Krishna Vats, a shopkeeper, said.

Congress spokesperson Mukesh Sharma took a jibe at the BJP on the issue of power cuts. "There is a joke on social networking sites these days. It says 'acche din' had been promised, not 'acchi raatein'," he said.

Singh also took on AAP over the issue and blamed the party for not fulfilling promises made to the people of Delhi. "Where are those people who promised 700 litres of water per households? They are now leaving their own party because it has no internal democracy," he said.

He promised to lend support to the locals in their cause at all costs. "We will meet the lieutenant governor over this and will protest if our demands aren't addressed. We will even go to jail if required," he said.
