NEW DELHI: The Met department declared a heatwave over Delhi as the mercury continued its northward journey, touching 44.7 degrees celsius on Thursday, the highest maximum recorded this year. The airport, where the temperature is usually a few degrees higher than in the main city, recorded its highest temperature of this year at 46.6 degrees celsius. It is also the highest temperature Palam has recorded in June in the past 11 years.

"The last time temperatures went this high in Palam was in 2003. On June 5 that year, the maximum went up to 47.1 degrees celsius," said a Met official. The last two days of this week are expected to be hotter still. Weather website Weather Underground has predicted maximum temperatures of 46 and 47 degrees celsius for Friday and Saturday respectively. The Met department has pegged the temperatures only a little lower at 44 and 45 degrees respectively.

"Hot and dry winds are blowing over the northwest plains from the Rajasthan desert. These have raised the temperatures across the region and heatwave conditions have been recorded over many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. The highest maximum temperature in the region was recorded in Rajasthan's Phalodi where the day temperature went up to 48.5 degrees celsius.

With its maximum temperature four degrees above normal, the morning was no better in the capital. The minimum temperature went up to 27.7 degrees celsius. The highest minimum temperature of 30 degrees celsius was recorded in Delhi University while the lowest minimum of 24.3 degrees celsius was recorded at Lodhi Road. The lowest maximum for the day was 42.6 degrees celsius, recorded at Pusa.

Met officials said there is no immediate respite in sight and high temperatures are likely to continue all through the next week. "There will be no significant change in the maximum temperatures during the next two to three days. In fact, heatwave conditions will continue. Areas that could face a heatwave till Saturday include Rajasthan and isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west UP, MP, Vidarbha, Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Kutch," said a Met official.
