NEW DELHI: Lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung has appealed to parents to prevent their children from speeding on bikes around the city on Shab-e-Barat this Friday. "It is an occasion for worship and paying respect to the departed. In the past years there has been a growing menace of bikers misusing the occasion... on the streets of Delhi," a statement from the LG's office said.

The LG has also appealed to the young men to desist from any irresponsible behaviour. "Irrespective of age, police have been instructed to strictly control miscreants. Bikers are warned that any misbehaviour will be dealt with a heavy hand and the sole responsibility and repercussions will rest with them." The traffic police has decided to deploy 182 teams to check revellers.

Special teams on patrol bikes as well as local police will also be deployed to chase and nab stunt bikers across the city. Anybody caught involved in stunt biking will be detained till they attend counselling sessions along with their parents. Special teams on motorbikes and PCR vans will be deployed in the vulnerable areas around south, central and New Delhi.

"Cases will be registered against the owners of these vehicles," said Muktesh Chander, special CP traffic. He said the youngsters are advised to adhere to traffic rules for the safety of themselves and others. Action will also be taken against bikers for violations such as speeding, riding without helmets and triple riding. Their motorcycles and driving licences will be impounded and the riders will be arrested arrested on the spot. "If the riders are found to be under influence of alcohol or in possession of arms such as knives, nunchaku and bicycle chain, charges will be slapped," police officials said.

In fact teams from the district police will also be asked to monitor the law and order situations during Shab-e-Barat as a number of cases of misbehaviour were registered last year.

"We will deploy our forces from 8pm on June 13 to 6am on June 14 to conduct the drive," said a senior police officer. He added that measure would be taken to keep the pedestrians on footpaths and guide the devotees.

Officials added that all major roads would be barricaded and special checking teams armed with alcometers would be deployed at major intersections.
