Will Bachelor of Management Studies be a casualty of FYUP rollback?

NEW DELHI: As the stalemate between the University Grants Commission and Delhi University continues, the 25,357 aspirants of Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) have been left wondering whether the course will survive if FYUP is rolled back.

The entrance test for the course was to be held on June 26. Introduced under the four-year undergraduate programme, BMS is one of the popular non-technical professional courses and attracted a large number of applicants for its 840 seats.

The course was introduced after scrapping three popular finance and management courses. However, with UGC ordering %restoration of the three-year structure at Delhi University along with the courses which were scrapped to launch FYUP, applicants have been left with no choice but to wait and watch. "I don't want FYUP and BMS to be scrapped. It is a course of my choice and I am working really hard to clear this exam," says Agastya Sood.

While some students are reconsidering taking admission in BMS amid such confusion, others just want to get in, irrespective of whether they are enrolled under the three-year programme or the four-year one.

Preeksha Sharma, who spent hours at the coaching centre, preparing for the entrance test, says, "I just want to be done with admissions. I have invested time and money in preparing for the BMS exam and if the course gets scrapped all my efforts goes down the drain."

Many students are also thinking of waiting for admissions to Economics and BCom honours courses as they cannot depend on Bachelor of Management Studies alone.

"With all the uncertainty surrounding the course, its just not worth the risk," says Sakshi Jain.

However, there are also those hoping that UGC's standing committee will keep the best interest of the students in mind while deciding on the issue.

"BMS is my priority. I hope the authorities will think of us while deciding," said Shivani Dang.
