The decision isn't too far away and could come as early as next week, sources said. Talking to TOI, chief conservation of forests AK Shukla said, "Our objective is to see that the quality of the bird sanctuary improves. To mark an eco-sensitive zone of 10 km around the Okhla Bird Sanctuary , which is indeed not a real sanctuary but a wetland, is impractical. We take cognizance of the fact."
Petitioners fighting the case in the National Green Tribunal expect the government to take a "pro-environment decision".
"The 100-metre radius that was announced by the UP government is an eyewash. We hope to get a fair decision that at least allows a buffer between 2-5km around the sanctuary; else, we always have the option of challenging the decision," said Gaurav Bansal, the lawyer who represented petitioner Amit Kumar in the NGT.
RK Goel, judicial consultant of the NGT, said, "The decision is now largely in the hands of the MoEF and finally the state government of UP. The issue is expected to be resolved soon enough."
Shukla said any decision taken by the Centre will have to be accepted and enforced by the UP government. "Allowing highrises or highly polluting structures in close vicinity of any area of ecological sensitivity will need prevention and our decision will be based upon that," Shukla added.
