NEW DELHI: The Delhi government will soon set up 320 Mahila Suraksha Dals (MSDs) across the capital to address issues of women safety in public places.

One MSD in each of the 11 districts of the city will be launched on Raksha Bandhan as a pilot program. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the chief secretary on Monday. "It was decided that, instead of creating new parallel structures, Awaaz Uthao Project which was initiated by the Delhi government and addresses issues of women's safety will be renamed MSD and be further strengthened both in terms of composition and functioningm," a Delhi government official said.

Under the initiative, MSDs will work at the grassroots-level to address issues of women safety in public places and support women in distress, including those in situations of sexual harassment, assault and rape.

These MSDs will comprise of retired army personnel, representatives from the local community (both men and women) and local NGO representatives.

"It is envisaged that MSDs would bring about perceptible improvement in societal mindset towards gender issues," the official added.
