'I've only requested the government to give me the cash reward'

There was a mini storm brewing in the Hyderabad sporting circuit on Thursday Just after tennis ace Sania Mirza expressed her "hurt" and "sadness" over a Telangana BJP leader calling her an 'outsider', another Hyderabadi sportsperson, Saina Nehwal, took the opportunity to voice her "sadness", albeit for a different reason.

The World No 7 shuttler, who pulled out of the Commonwealth Games, was upset at not having received the cash reward of Rs 50 lakh that she was promised after she won the bronze at the 2012 Olympics. This, after Sania received her Rs 1 crore cheque from the government. Taking to her microblogging page, the shuttler posted, "I am happy to know that Sania Mirza has become the brand ambassador of Telengana and I am proud of Telengana but — I am very hurt and sad that I have still not received the cash award from my state for the Olympic bronze medal that I won for my country (sic)." While many have slammed the badminton player for the timing of the statement, others supported her. Talking to us about the issue, Saina says, "I've only requested the government to give me the cash reward, as it's been pending for two years now. And it is something that had been promised to me."

Throwing more light on the issue, Saina's dad Harvir Singh says, "It's been two years and this topic has come up for discussion so many times.

When we met the former chief minister, Kiran Kumar Reddy, at various events, we have asked him personally about the cash reward and every time we were told that we will get it. But it has not come in two years' time."

While Saina believes she is "only asking for what is my due", others have called her an opportunist for using Sania's controversy to bring to light her issue. "There is nothing wrong in talking about it now," says Harvir Singh, defending his daughter. "Saina had been telling me 'Papa, mera paisa nahi aaya', but I would always tell her, 'Aa jaayega, beta'. We waited, but nothing happened. People have to understand that we might be in need of money," he says.

Saina's timing also throws light on the underlying displeasure in Hyderabad's sporting community on Sania being chosen the brand ambassador of the state. But Harvir dismisses such talk, saying, "Saina is happy about Sania Mirza becoming the Telangana state ambassador. But she felt ignored. If the government can give Sania money to prepare for the US Open, why can't they give Saina what she has al ready earned? She is not begging, she is only asking what was promised to her. And Saina has been in Hyderabad for the past 16 years, and all throughout, she has represented Hyderabad and India."
