With just 8 guards for 90 acres, park security a joke

NEW DELHI: A day after a Spanish tourist alleged she was molested in Lodhi Garden, TOI took stock of the security arrangements there and found that there aren't enough guards and lighting. Charu Sharma, who regularly walks in the garden, said, "I make sure to exit before sunset. The newspapers are full of stories about how unsafe the city is."

Of the garden's eight gates, only gates 1 and 4 are kept locked. And there are just eight guards to keep a watch on the more than 90 acres. At night, there are only five guards. "We have complained to the supervisor about the lack of security personnel. It is extremely difficult for us to keep an eye on the entire area," said a guard on duty. He added that some visitors refuse to leave even after 8pm, the closing time. "We take two rounds whistling and asking people to leave but some youngsters hang around."

Radhika Sharma, a resident of Lodhi Colony who comes to the garden on weekends, said, "I can't see any guards around. They only take a round when it is closing time. I mostly come alone and leave early. If I had to complain, I won't know whom to approach".

Namrata Kumar, a regular for nearly eight years, said, "Many isolated spots in the garden remain unlit". She added boys and men stare and pass lewd remarks at women and couples.

However, some regulars said the garden feels a safer place now. Chhaya Jha (72), who was taking a stroll, said, "Five years ago, I saw a young woman being teased and harassed near a tomb. I immediately raised an alarm and the man was caught and handed over to police. I feel the place is safer now".
