NEW DELHI: Hundreds of Delhiites heading for Rakhi celebrations were stranded for more than five hours after a heavy shower choked all the major roads around the city. Choc-a-block traffic was noticed in almost all the arterial roads with vehicles trying to get past huge pools of water. The problem got compounded with vehicles getting stalled in the middle of carriageways.

Usual complaints of traffic jams were reported from across major parts of south Delhi—on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Aurobindo Marg and August Kranti Marg. The connecting roads were also jammed due to heavy traffic. Though the traffic police had deployed additional personnel, little could be done to divert the traffic as the roads connecting the arterial roads were also waterlogged.

Traffic officials said more than 50 lakh vehicles were out on the roads as people travelled to every part of the city for Rakhi. "In south Delhi, waterlogging led to massive traffic blockades. Our staff did whatever was possible, including managing traffic through just one lane, placing diversions, removing broken vehicles. However, the situation was not normal till night," said a traffic official. "We even had to stop traffic in certain areas of south Delhi for some time and allow vehicles to travel on the wrong carriageway to clear the jam," said a senior officer.

Police said jams were also reported from near Bhagwan Dass Road, Kashmere Gate Metro station, Mahipal Pur Chowk red light, Nizamudin Khatta to Akshardham, Lado Sarai-CDR Chowk, Delhi high court, Okhla red light, Okla Mandi, UP Link Road near Akshardham, Chirag Dilli to Moolchand BRT corridor, Palam Gaon, Sarai Kale Khan, Hanuman Setu, Jahangirpuri Road No. 51, Chhatrasal stadium, Model Town, Mahipalpur flyover, Munirka, Africa Avenue-Church Road crossing and Anand Parbat. Traffic on Mathura Road was stalled for hours as both carriageways got flooded.

People coming to Delhi from Noida also suffered after a sewer pipeline was ruptured by the heavy flow of water. "I was supposed to drive from Mayur Vihar to GK. It usually takes me an hour to travel this distance but today I had to spend four hours," said Ashok Khurana, a businessman from east Delhi.

Snarls continued in major parts of east Delhi even in the evening. NH-24, towards Ghazipur, was jammed due to waterlogging near the Akshardham temple.

Police officials said the civic bodies had been asked to clear water on priority basis.
