ABVP makes new promises for DUSU win

NEW DELHI: Upbeat after the recent poll results in the universities of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is trying to cash in on its fight for the FYUP rollback in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections.

In a pre-election conference on Thursday, ABVP said its next mission would be to get more hostels, canteens at subsidized rates within the next 12 months.

According to Rohit Chahal, national secretary, ABVP, "We have tried to fulfil the promises we made after winning three of the four central panel posts last year. Many issues could not be addressed as we focused on the struggle against anti-student reforms like FYUP. With a new government at the Centre, we are hopeful of influencing it to grant more hostels for DU."

The manifesto also includes introducing evening shift classes in morning colleges to increase student intake. "Our main demands include new hostels, especially for girls; special DU buses; enforcement of Rent Control Act; concessional Metro passes; women security; CCTV cameras; and filling up vacant teaching and non-teaching posts. Moreover, for the past 17 years no new college has been added," said Saket Bahuguna, Delhi secretary, ABVP.
