"We have already started recording the offences by each traffic violators electronically and the data base is getting updated. In the next six months we will have good data with details of offences committed by huge number of drivers. We will urge people to get the drivers' credentials checked," special commissioner (traffic) Muktesh Chander said at a national workshop on road safety by World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday.
He added that the traffic police would look into the option of creating an IT-enabled interface so that people can get the details of their drivers quickly. Chander said this will be very useful for schools and other organisations that hire drivers for carrying more passengers.
This is being seen as a move to shift the focus from "vehicles" to "drivers". Chander said, "All these years we took several initiatives to reduce offences except anything that can hit the livelihood of offending drivers. So, we have recommended to the transport department to suspend the licence or permit of over 16,000 drivers and vehicles," Chander said.
Chander added that he was in favour of having a system where the traffic offenders get negative points for every traffic offence. "I personally feel that licences should be cancelled after the offender accumulates certain number of points rather than charging fines. Then he should be made to follow the rigorous process of applying for a fresh licence after six months' suspension," he said.
In the past eight months, the city traffic police has issued challans or prosecuted at least 25 lakh drivers. This figure is likely to cross 40 lakh by this year end. Chander said there is high probability that nine out of 10 offenders go undetected.
