The man, Nirmal Ghorami, had been working at the temple since the last 10 years and was in charge of housekeeping. His family said he had been depressed since the authorities had questioned him and a few other employees about some discrepancies in the accounts.
Police said on Saturday, that the secretary of the temple had asked Ghorami and three other employees about some money that was to be deposited in the bank. A senior member of the temple committee asked the four to explain why the money was missing as they had been made in charge of depositing it.
"It is very unfortunate that Nirmal Ghorami took the extreme step. He worked year for many years and was in charge of depositing money in the bank. We questioned him after we found some problems with the accounts. We are really sad about the incident," said Ananda Mukherjee, president of the Kali Mandir Committee which runs the guesthouse in Chittaranjan Park.
Meanwhile Nirmal Ghorami's family members told police that he was depressed after being questioned. "He thought he will be charged with theft if he could not prove his innocence," said Pritam Ghorami, his nephew.
Ghorami was found hanging in a room at the guesthouse that he had gone to clean by another employee around 10am. "I found the door of the room open. When I went inside to check, I found him hanging and informed the others," said Aseem.
Police said Ghorami belonged to Kakdwip in West Bengal and had been staying in the city with his wife and 10-year-old son. Police said the body has been sent for postmortem.
