The plan may go through some changes—objections and suggestions have been sought from the public till August 25. India's first public golf course was opened in January 2000 and started as a nine-hole course. Initially, there were several litigations and constraints. The course hasn't been renovated since inauguration despite standard golf course practices that require relaying of the course every 6-7 years.
"There were some compromises made on designing of the course due to various reasons, for which the court cases are also responsible. We had been thinking of expanding the facilities and were toying with the idea of introducing lakes and more trees," said a senior DDA official. A consultant has been appointed to supervise the renovation process, the official said.
DDA wants suggestions from the public since people understand requirements better, being regular users of the course, said the official. Changes in the course will come up in the drainage facilities, fairway areas and trees.
The course will retain many of its quirky hazards, said the official. "The golfer will still have to play over trees on revamped holes using the existing holes 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Given the retention of trees on fairways, the majority of bunkering will be associated with the greens," the official said.
Among the changes planned to the 110-acre, 18-hole course are a new clubhouse, new driving range and associated practice facilities and a new course layout
