Ramshackle state of once-aspirational audi has KMC's celeb alumni furious

Over the years many Delhi University students moved on from performing have at college stages to entering the film and music industries as professionals. The Kirori Mal College auditorium is one such stage, which saw debut performances by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Satish Kaushik, Manish Choudhary , KK and Subir Malik.
Sadly, the doors to this prestigious auditorium have been shut for over two years now and the audi and the stage are in shambles. This came to the light a few days ago when pictures of the crumbling auditorium were shared across KMC alumni groups and society pages on Facebook. These pictures saw immediate reactions online from the alumni, all of them sharing their anger and sadness over their home stage being destroyed.

Behind the scene

According to staff representatives of the cultural societies, the issue of the renovation of the auditorium came out in August 2011 and an architect was finalized to design the new auditorium and a governing body formed along with a subcommittee to overlook the renovation. With time, and with the retirement and shifting of governing body members, the project kept getting delayed and after the new administrative body took charge in 2012, the project lost steam completely . Keval Arora, the faculty member associated with Players, said many appeals to the principal to take action on the state of auditorium have gone unheard. "We celebrated the 50th year of the auditorium in 2007, which was attended by all our active talented alumni. We had a stage and now it's gone.

Nothing is being done to rectify that. The current batches and members of Players and Musoc are suffering.

When the alumni community found out, we got responses for people willing to contribute financially . But finances aren't the problem right now. Considering how KMC is a university-funded college, the lack of support or interest from that end is disturbing. The authorities with their time milega toh karenge mentality need to take this seriously, otherwise our students will keep suffering." Sumitra Mohanty , the faculty in charge for Musoc added, "Our students had the best facilities and now they have none. I have been associated with the society for 30 years. I wanted to invite all Musoc members back to college to celebrate 25years of the society but there was no place to invite them too.

That get-together never happened and we don't know till when we will ask our students to practice in lawns and classrooms."

Angry alumni appeals to the principal

Subir Malik from Parikrama, said, "I still say that I would be nothing and Parikrama would have never been formed had it not been for Musoc and the teacher associated with it. That music room, which is now completely destroyed, was home to us for three years. It was something that my seniors welcomed me to, something I then passed on to my juniors. I saw the picture of the destroyed auditorium online, the hall of fame board that has names like Amitabh Bachchan and all, fallen on the ground. It's really disturbing. With no facilities, what are the current students supposed to do?

How will they learn any of the things we did at the college level?

Actor Sushant Singh told us, "When I first saw the picture, I was furious. How can a college let this happen to the most important point of the entire campus, to the hub of all art and culture activities? That stage is home to me and has nurtured me.

I remember some talk about a renovation project. When I saw the pictures I realized this has been happening for more than five years now. I don't understand what the administration is doing and why is this not a serious enough issue for them. This should be taken up immediately."

Director Vijay Krishna Acharya, an active Players member from his college days, told us, "It is shameful and frustrating that a college doesn't understand the significance of its own stage. I was a Kanpur boy with DU dreams and joining KMC and Players changed my life. The actions of the current principal and the supporting body don't make sense at all. The societies and the audi were the pride of KMC. The authorities should wake up now to finish this project and give back to the students what they deserve."
