NEW DELHI: Two teenagers were crushed to death under a mound of earth, while digging for clay, in east Delhi's New Ashok Nagar area on Saturday afternoon. The deceased have been identified as Vinit (16) and Ashok (15).

The incident took place around 1pm. The two had gone to the Kondli canal, with two other friends, for clay to make idols for the Janmashtami festival. Police officials said that in their bid to look for wet clay, the four boys climbed down the embankment. Ashok was digging while Vinit and the two others were collecting the clay in a bag, police said.

When they dug deeper into the embankment, a mound of clay fell on them. The two boys were caught under the clay and choked. Their friends, who suffered minor injuries, were able to get away, police said. The two who escaped reached a petrol pump near Kalyanpuri crossing and informed the guards. The guards and locals rushed to the spot and tried to pull out the children but failed. A PCR team was able to pull the two out and rushed them to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where the two died during treatment.
