In a four-hour drive, DTF towed away 36 vehicles and challaned six that were parked on pavements. DTF officials said the drive will continue till Saturday. "We want to ensure that pedestrians have hassle-free access to pavements. The drive will continue for a week so that people know that action will be taken if they encroach again,'' said C Velmurugan, SDM (Preet Vihar).
Delhi Traffic Police and East Delhi Municipal Corporation deployed seven cranes and many personnel for the drive. Officials said PWD has been directed to provide adequate manpower so that the stretch is freed of encroachment in the next few days.
TOI had highlighted the plight of pedestrians on this stretch, on September 3.
However, traffic police are yet to act on their promise to stop illegal parking on pavements. Last week, special CP (traffic) Muktesh Chander had promised a crackdown, starting with Lala Lajpat Rai Marg about which TOI wrote on September 2. Chander said, "I had written to DCP traffic (south) to take action. I'll check with him why no action was taken."
