JNU students' union elections on Friday

NEW DELHI: Even the left parties that have traditionally ruled Jawaharlal Nehru University's student body say it won't be easy this time.

About 8,500 students — a large majority of them post-graduate ones — will vote into office a new set of representatives this week. Polling is on Friday, September 11, and results are expected by Monday. And no-one is confident of a win this time. The university held its presidential debate on Wednesday night and all seven contenders for the central panel post presented their vision for JNU before the student body.

For once, there were vocal supporters of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which has seen its support-base on campus increase substantially after the Lok Sabha polls were swept by NDA.

The Prime Minister — seen as enemy no. 1 on a campus for long considered the last bastion of the Left — came in for much criticism at the debate but also nearly as much praise. Some candidates were also severely ticked off by the election committee for a variety of violations — referring to the sexual harassment complaint against the former JNUSU president, talking about vegetarian and non-vegetarian food being prepared on the same counters was considered "casteist" and the ABVP candidate's calling Hem Mishra a "terrorist." Mishra was accused of having links with naxals and was arrested by Maharasthra police in 2013.
