Where expensive cars and hip youngsters crowd the south side of the road, the north is heavily encroached, and the entry to the unauthorized colony lies through a space constricted by a bus stop and illegal parking. To get to it from the main road, one needs to clamber over a broken wall, wade through debris and arrive at a kuchcha road that leads into the colony.
The public works depart ment, in-charge of maintaining the road, claims it regularly removes the debris and has told traffic police to watch out for people dumping waste there. A member of the international artists' association, Khoj, that is located in Khirki Extension says beautification will make no difference to the colony until residents treat the whole area responsibly.
"The main road was repaired after years in February but has again become a mess. There is encroachment in the park outside Khirki Extension but no alternatives have been provided. People do not care about public space and children have no space to play here.Most open spaces have been encroached upon," she said.
MLA Somnath Bharti says Khirki mushroomed in a haphazard way. "Jamunwala Park — which is buried under debris--is set to be cleaned. DDA has been asked to take up the project to revive the park which is designated a `green area' in the master plan. The debris has to be removed by PWD while the municipal corporation is in charge of sanitation and should stop unauthorized construction," he said.
Khirki Extension and Khirki Village are with different municipal councillors. Congress councillor Neetu Kochar says the roads are in a bad state because sewer work is on. "Residents throw debris and waste on the road," she said.
BJP councillor Meenu said, "Since this is an unauthorized colony, it is very difficult to get sanitation staff for cleaning the area. Some work is taking place but it is not satisfactory. I have written to the corporation for more workers".
