Monsoon magic returns to Delhi, wet week ahead

NEW DELHI: Delhiites enjoyed a wet weekend after suffering a long dry spell in the middle of the rainy season, as monsoon magic returned to a parched northwest India.

Heavy showers were reported from most parts of the city on Sunday, with the Safdarjung station recording 35.8mm rain between 8.30am and 5.30pm. The Met department said the coming week will see an increase in frequency and intensity of rain over Delhi as monsoon finally enters an active phase over the region.

Commuters, however, had a tough time with the downpour triggering the usual problems of waterlogging on several arterial roads. Jams, worsened by a religious procession moving from north to central Delhi, had traffic in a crawl on Ring Road for a good three hours. Flooding was also reported from some Metro stations and residential colonies.

Although the month ended on a wet note, rains in August this year were just 56% of normal in the city, the lowest since 2006. With 139.1mm rain recorded till 8.30pm on Sunday, this was the third driest August in the past 10 years after 2005 (132mm) and 2006 (98mm). The city had a dry spell from August 12 to 28.

The Met office said moderate to heavy rains can be expected in the city through next week. "It may not rain on all days but rainfall will be more evenly distributed across the city and its intensity will be higher. Temperatures too will remain lower," said B P Yadav, director, IMD.

Yadav said there was a low pressure system over central India parts which is expected to touch north Gujarat and east Rajasthan by Wednesday. "This is bringing a huge quantity of moisture over northwest and central India. A western disturbance also exists over the western Himalayan region. Both these systems will keep the monsoon strong over central India and active over northwest India," he said.

"Meanwhile, another system will start developing over the Bay of Bengal, which will bring even more moisture into northwest and central India. This is what we call an active phase of the monsoon and its major beneficiaries this time are northwest and central India, especially the northwest which has received very little rainfall this season," said Yadav.

Sunday morning, meanwhile, started on a hot note. In fact, the day's maximum temperature of 34 degrees celsius, was recorded before 10am. Then a thundershower lasting almost two hours brought the temperature down by almost eight degrees. At 11.30am, it was 26.2 degrees celsius and by 2.30pm, the temperature was down to a pleasant 26 degrees. The minimum recorded on Sunday was 25 degrees celsius, one degree below normal.
