PWD Swachh drive to prune trees for more visible signage

NEW DELHI: Starting from October 2 and spanning over three weeks, the public works department will take up several projects to clean up the city. Under prime minister Narendra Modi's initiative Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the agency will focus largely on pruning the green cover on its network of 1,200km of roads.

Arun Baroka, secretary, PWD said that pruning of trees on the central verges and islands will be undertaken to improve visibility of streetlights and signage. "PWD will also remove posters, banners and illegal hoardings from PWD roads. The horticulture department has been directed to improve the green cover below 70 flyovers. The agency will also be removing debris from roads, footpaths and kerbs," he said.

The agency will also be cleaning streetlight poles and fittings and ensure that lights are operational. The other major project that PWD will work upon is the repair work of drains and replacement of manhole covers.

Meanwhile, the labour department has asked all district officers to draw up a plan for carrying out cleanliness drives in their respective areas. "All trade unions will be also be involved in the cleanliness drive. The labour commissioner will be meeting trade unions and RWAs of labour colonies in Shahdara, Okhla, Karampura and Ashok Vihar," said a source.
