NEW DELHI: A group of protesters from the Tibetan youth congress staged a protest on Friday morning outside the Taj Palace hotel where Chinese premier Xi Jinping and other Chinese government delegates were staying.

20 protesters have been detained, police said.

Police had already put up barricades on San Martin Marg anticipating the protests and stopped the protesters before they could reach the hotel. According to them, a group of around 30 students had reached the area with flags and placards shouting slogans against the Chinese delegation. "We will keep demanding the freedom of our homeland as long as the Chinese delegates are here," said a spokesperson of the Tibetan group.

Police had deployed four companies of rapid action force and an equal number of Delhi police personnel for security around the hotel premises.

A prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC has been put in place around the hotel to prevent any untoward incident, a police official said.

As a result of the protest, traffic at San Martin Marg was stalled for an hour.
