Constable Jagbir and Narender were on patrolling duty on their bike. At around 2am, they saw some people sitting in an autorickshaw in L block and approached them.
The police personnel, after brief questioning, apparently asked the the men to accompany them to the police station.
When they were just 200 metres away from the police station, the assailants fired shots at them killing one of the constables at the spot. The second cop was shot in the back.
The two were taken to hospital by the police even as the shooters fled the spot. Jagbir was declared brought dead, while Narender was admitted in the ICU. His condition is said to be critical.
A manhunt has been launched for the assailants and an FIR has been registered at the Vijay Vihar police station.
This year, four Delhi Police personnel have been killed. The current incident comes a day after assailants opened fire at cops in Connaught Place.
The previous case, where constable Dharmpal was shot dead in northeast Delhi in September still remains unsolved. In July, a notorious criminal had shot dead constable Shivraj Tomar.
