Jalebi gets a Euro touch
As the demand for Indianised bakery items is rising, chefs at different hotels and bakeries in the city are busy creating unique dishes. A young chef in the city, Suwarna Arora, who runs a homebakery, Choconiche, in Sector 12, says, "I've been getting orders for different varieties of cakes and pies for Diwali. Indian sweets with a western twist are something a lot of people are demanding this year. It also gives us a chance to diversify and experiment. I've created dishes like jalebi with chocolate fondue and nuts, firni cheesecake and rum and chocolate gulab jamun."
To give their customers a special treat, Mosaic Hotel in Sector 18 is offering special pies and cakes. "We've created a chocolate cashewnut almond pie - a Diwali special - which comes with a diya in the centre. The hampers that we're offering comprises chocolates, dry fruits and a Ganesha idol, balancing the western and desi element," a hotel official told us. Raman Kumar, a bank employee, who lives in Sector 11, said, "It is quite boring to gift the same kind of mithai year after year, so, this time, I decided to buy Indian flavoured chocolates for my friends."
