On Saptami, puja pandals buzz with crowds and gigs

NEW DELHI: Music, dance, drama, puppet shows and Rabindrasangeet; there was something for everyone this Saptami.People thronged in thousands to puja pandals, despite it being a weekday and a workday . Puja committees pulled all stops to ensure that guests were thoroughly entertained at south Delhi pujas. If traffic was any indication, residents lined up with their party, rather than puja hats on.

Matri Mandir Sarbojanin Durga Puja in Safdarjung Enclave has lined up a traditional Rajasthani puppet show, apart from the Mahasaptami aarti.This will be followed by a fusion dance programme. The highlights of the evening were performances by Sonakshi and Sangram, both participants of a music reality show.

" We try to offer something to everyone and make everyone feel a part of the event. So we have the puppet show that will be enjoyed by kids, and the music show which people of all ages love," said Debashish Saha, chairman of the puja organizing committee GK II Durgostav puja on the other hand, sticks to traditional entertainment in keeping with their theme of a zamindar-style temple. On Saptami afternoon, guests were treated to a bhog served by members of the puja committee while in the evening a rabindra sangeet performance by Shreya Guhathakurta was on the cards. The evening will end with a dance drama depicting Mahishasurmardini and Tagore's Chandalika by Ranjana and troupe from Kolkata. "We have always tried to maintain the dignity of Durga Puja and present entertainment that is worthy of such a great event", said Abhijit Ray Choudhury , member of the committee.

Navapally Puja Samity near Market No.1 in CR Park is all about community . The events in this puja are organized keeping in mind the talents of its residents. While 60 kids from the neighbourhood put up a dance depicting Mahishasurmardini on Saturday , residents from all over south Delhi participate in various music and dance shows on all puja days. "We encourage residents to showcase their talents in Durga Puja events, which they do enthusiastically," said Suman Chatterjee, member, organizing committee. "We have kept our programme short," said Subir Datta, general-secretary of K Block Co-operative Durga Puja Samity .
