The murder bid, however, has turned out to be a curious case of love, treachery and conspiracy as the shooter has revealed he was hired for Rs 50,000 by Kirat's wife and his best friend, Kuldhir Singh. The police have arrested all three of them under sections of criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder, DCP (southwest) Suman Goyal said.
The actual drama had unfolded a few months ago when Kirat was arrested on the charge of raping a woman, who used to be his friend. He was sent to Tihar jail. Kirat entrusted Kuldhir, who owns a travel agency in Connaught Place, with the task of taking care of his wife in his absence. Kuldhir accompanied Kirat's wife to jail at times and often brought her groceries and household items. He also helped her financially.
However, over the weeks, Kuldhir allegedly developed intimacy with Kirat's wife. They finally decided to live together and planned to get married soon. But their happiness did not last long as Kirat was granted bail and released from jail. This came as a jolt to the lovers. As Kirat stayed at home, his wife could go out to meet Kuldhir. Kuldhir then began to frequent Kirat's house more often so that he could spend times with the woman.
However, Kirat got suspicious and began to avoid Kuldhir. The two even had a nasty fight a few weeks later after which Kuldhir hatched a conspiracy to get rid of him. Kuldhir contacted Muqeem, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, and promised him Rs 50,000 in lieu of eliminating Kirat.
Kuldhir took Kirat's wife in confidence and promised to marry soon after Kirat was out of their way. A few days ago, Kuldhir set up a meeting with Kirat and asked Muqueem to accompany him. They were headed towards Delhi Cantonment area in Kirat's car and had reached the Subrato Park in southwest Delhi when Muqueem whipped out a countrymade pistol and fired a shot at Kirat.
The bullet pierced through his head and in the meantime, Muqueem reloaded the pistol and fired a second shot. The impact was such that Kirat got thrown out the car. He lay on the road surrounded by passersby when the crowd noticed the two men in the car trying to flee.
Police were informed and a team led by SHO Delhi Cantonment and sub-inspector K B Jha nabbed the two men. Doctors said one of the bullets got stuck in the outer layer of his skull. Thus the vital parts of his brain were not affected. Kirat has been operated upon and is out of danger, police said. The countrymad pistol, which was used to shoot Kirat, has been seized. The police are investigating if Kuldhir also had another associate and interrogating him in this connection.
