Delhi's commandos never waste a bullet

NEW DELHI: When terrorists attacked Mumbai on November 26, 2008, NSG commandos couldn't be pressed into action for the first 12 hours due to logistical issues. But Delhi is better placed to counter such an attack. Not only is NSG housed at its doorstep in Manesar, Delhi Police's own SWAT (special weapons and tactics) commandos are a highly trained and well equipped team.

Hand-picked from the constabulary, these police commandos are second to none in terms of skills and motivation. They can spring from deep sleep to action, fully armed, within a minute of an alarm. The unit, which was formed before the Commonwealth Games, is best equipped to handle crises in the capital as its training and combat skills are Delhi-centric — from climbing multi-storey buildings within seconds to rescuing hostages from a room located in the core of a hotel or a DTC bus or the Metro. And while US Navy Seals (those who took out Osama bin Laden) fire two bullets to the head — called a double tap — Delhi commandos are taught to finish each target with just one bullet. "Their motto is: one shot, one kill," said an officer.

"Armed with sophisticated weapons and technology, these men form the backbone of a crack team of the Special Cell that has been created to thwart a terror attack or a hostage situation in the capital," said S N Shrivastava, special commissioner of police, Special Cell.

When the SWAT team was founded in 2010, it received training from NSG and former Army commandos, but now, after training at Delhi Police Training School in Jharoda Kalan (southwest Delhi), they learn advanced skills from Israel's counter-terror and intelligence unit, Mossad. The training includes advanced hand-to-hand combat moves from Krav Maga, a martial art developed by the Israeli army. The commandos also learn warfare techniques, such as identifying and defusing improvised explosive devices, from Major General (retired) Satvir Singh in Jodhpur.

The men chosen during the basic police course are given three months of preliminary training and then 10 months of SWAT training. "They undergo rigorous training to perform high-risk operations that are beyond the capability of regular policemen," said Shrivastava. Most of the men in the present batch had joined Delhi Police in 2010. There are nine sub-inspector rank officers.

The city commandos have a fleet of bulletproof mine-protected vehicles and are deployed in such a way that they can reach any spot in Delhi within 20 minutes. In fact, 20-30 commandos are always kept at the ready.

Pressed into action, they can carry out reconnaissance, design maps and begin an assault within 10 minutes of reaching a spot. Each "hit-team" consists of a team leader, two recce officers, a communication specialist, two sharpshooters and a medic.

Each commando is armed with an AK47 assault rifle or MP5 submachine gun with at least four 30-round magazines, a Glock 17 or Glock 26 pistol, hand grenades, a wireless set, a 20-metre nylon rope, a pencil torch, a bulletproof helmet (patka for Sikhs), bulletproof jacket, flame torch, cutter and a commando dagger. Special knee and elbow pads are also worn for protection during stealth attacks.

"In a typical operation, the comman dos are trained to infiltrate using the best possible entry , which might include grappling up a rainwater pipe or slithering down a terrace using a grappling hook. Physical fitness, mental strength and expert weapon handling are key to their survival in combat," said their trainer, Inspector Om Prakash Sharma, himself a commando and SHO of Shahdara police station till 2008.

"I watched the 2611 terrorist attack on television and decided to become a commando. I vow to never let another such attack be successful," said one of the commandos undertaking a refresher course at the police training college."Their confidence, rigour, strength and skills should make every Delhiite feel safe," said an officer.
