NEW DELHI: CBI on Monday apprised a special court about the current status of public servants, who were allegedly involved in the allocation of a coal block to Nagpur-based AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd that was chargesheeted by the agency, along with Congress MP Vijay Darda and others. The details of the status of probe in the case were made in response to the court's directions. Earlier, the court had sought clarifications from the CBI when the probe agency had filed a supplementary closure report in the case regarding the role of government servants who were allegedly involved in allocating the coal block to the accused firm. The court has now fixed the matter for consideration on January 21.

"Certain clarifications have been sought qua the supplementary final report earlier filed. IO has also furnished the present status of the public servants who were involved in the allocation of impugned coal block to M/s AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd. Same be taken on record," Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar said. During the hearing, the court also allowed an application filed by Vijay Darda's counsel seeking exemption from personal appearance on medical grounds for today.

CBI has chargesheeted Vijay Darda, his son Devendra Darda, Manoj Jayaswal, Director of AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd, and the firm, as accused in the case for offences under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 420 (cheating) of IPC and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court had earlier granted bail to Vijay Darda, Devendra and Jayaswal after they had appeared before it in pursuance to the summons issued against them. Vijay Darda, Devendra, Jayaswal and the firm were named as accused in the charge sheet filed by CBI on March 27 last year in which it had alleged that they had fraudulently acquired the coal blocks. Darda has denied the allegations against him.

Regarding AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd, CBI had claimed in its FIR that the firm, in its application form for allocation of coal blocks, had "fraudulently" concealed the fact that its group firms had previously been allocated five coal blocks. CBI had said that the 36th Screening Committee, which was headed by Coal Secretary, after concluding its deliberations on July 3, 2008, recommended allocation of Bander coal block jointly to JK Cement Ltd, M/s Century Textiles and Industries Ltd and AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd for their proposed plants in Karnataka and Maharashtra respectively.
