The constable, Vipin Tomar, underwent a surgery on Sunday night and is said to be in a critical state, police said.
Around 8.30am, a traffic constable posted near the picket in central Delhi called a PCR to report the incident. A team of cops rushed to the spot and admitted Tomar to RML Hospital.
Tomar, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in UP, was posted at the Barakhamba Road police station since three years. He had joined the force in January 2010. Tomar's family members said that he was scheduled to get married on February 10. According to the doctors, the bullet entered the right side of his head and came out from the left side. He was put on a life support system after the surgery.
Tomar stayed near the Paharganj police station while his family stayed in Muzaffarnagar. His family members alleged that he must have taken the step due to pressure at work. However, other constables at the Barakhamba Road police station said he never complained about his job. "Till Saturday, he was fine. He never looked depressed," said one of his colleagues.
Police suspect that Tomar was depressed over some family issues which he could not share with anyone. He had deleted all his Whatsapp chat history before the suicide attempt, police said.
