Delhi has around 8 lakh fake voters: Kejriwal

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday complained to the Election Commission about alleged irregularities in the Delhi electoral rolls published on Monday, and demanded that they be corrected before the ensuing assembly poll.

An AAP delegation comprising party chief Arvind Kejriwal and senior leaders Manish Sisodia and Ashutosh, called on Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath here to allege that Delhi state rolls were full of spurious and duplicate entries. At a press conference later, Kejriwal claimed that there were around 8 lakh fake voters enlisted in the latest rolls, with 3,96,914 voters holding 11,50,509 voter cards. "(This) means one voter has three to four cards," he alleged.

Sources in the Commission told TOI on Monday that though laws did not require EC to remove duplicate or bogus entries in the rolls before announcing polls in the state, it would examine AAP's complaint ahead of declaring the Delhi assembly poll date later this week. As per the rules, the corrections to the voters' list can be made until the last date for filing nominations in a constituency.

"Even after the polls are announced, the rolls can continue to be updated until the closing of nominations," a senior EC functionary told TOI on Tuesday.

The Commission, which deliberated on the Delhi poll schedule on Tuesday, has decided to wait for a few more days before announcing the election date. Sources said the poll watchdog will verify the allegations made by AAP regarding the "bogus" voters in the rolls, and possibly announce the polls by Friday.

The EC is being extra cautious about re-examining the Delhi rolls in view of the ongoing case in the Delhi High Court against large-scale mistakes in draft rolls released in October. The EC on Monday owned up to the imperfections, particularly in duplication of photographs, in the court and said they were being corrected. However, the court directed the EC to file an affidavit on the action being taken against the persons responsible for mistakes in the rolls. The affidavit is expected to be submitted to the court by January 13.
