The project, which is being executed by National Building Construction Corporation, has been under criticism in wake of allegations that the East Kidwai Nagar redevelopment plan is an example of "unintelligent planning" that would destroy the environment. The agency had contested the claims last year saying the project was meticulously planned, keeping best practices in mind.
The incident was reported around 9am when a team of eight workers were digging a basement at the site. According to police, the pile of loose soil beside the site was about 100 feet high and kept there without a barrier. It suddenly came crashing down burying six of them underneath. While two of them managed to pull themselves out, four others stayed buried.
Police and the fire department were informed immediately. A team of disaster management staff also rushed to the spot. The four men were dug out and rushed to AIIMS Trauma Center where one of them, Subodh, was declared dead on arrival. The other three-Rajesh (24), Subodh (25) and Brahmdev (45)-were unconscious but stated to be out of danger. Subodh had come to Delhi from Bhagalpur in Bihar. He was married and had two children.
Police said that the men were working for the contractor for eight months. A similar incident happened a few months ago at the same site but the workers had escaped with minor injuries. "No police complaint was filed at that time," said Sonu, a labourer.
However, NBCC officials said due care has been taken to ensure the safety of workers. They said the accident might have happened following leakage in a water pipe at the construction site that led to loosening of the soil which collapsed under its own weight. "We will offer a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of the deceased and have requested the government to look into the issue as well," said an official.
Workers protested with the body at the construction site for three hours demanding compensation of at least Rs 5 lakh. They also wanted legal action against the contractor. A case was registered under Section 304A of IPC against the contractor.
