NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old businessman was strangled in his office in north-west Delhi's Maurya Enclave area on Wednesday afternoon.
The room was found ransacked by unknown assailants who fled with his mobile phone and other valuables. Police suspect the role of a household help who has been missing since the incident.
The man, Mukesh Grover, worked as a commission agent, supplying pepper at Khari Baoli market.
The body was found lying on a chair with a cloth tied around Grover's neck. His office was located on the third floor of an apartment at the AU block in Maurya Enclave. The door of his office was found locked from outside.
Grover's family said that he had stayed back on Tuesday night at his office to finish some work, along with the household help. When his son Suneesh called him the next morning to find out whether he was coming back home, he found that his phone was switched off. Worried, Suneesh reached the office around 12.30pm and broke open the door, discovering the body.
Suneesh said that Grover had abrasions on his face. There were also signs of scuffle in the room. "The assailants broke open the locker and fled with cash to the tune of lakhs," Suneesh said.
Police said that the assailant had turned up the television's volume to drown the sound of the scuffle.
The body was sent to Ambedkar hospital for a postmortem and handed over to his family later at night. "We have registered a case of murder and robbery and investigations are on to identify and nab the criminals," said N Gnana Sambandhan, DCP northwest.
