Kejriwal to PM: Golden chance for statehood

NEW DELHI: There was chai as well as charcha. But more than just pleasantries were exchanged when Delhi's CM-designate Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia called on PM Narendra Modi on Thursday morning. The duo raised the issue of granting full statehood to Delhi while inviting the PM to Saturday's swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Grounds.

"We told the PM this was a golden opportunity for both governments, whose manifestos have promised full statehood, to work together on this. Modiji's government came with a full majority while AAP's government in Delhi came with a full majority too. Why should Delhi be denied the status of a 'full state'?" Sisodia later said.

Modi was reportedly non-committal on the issue but promised to give the demand a close look. As for the swearing-in invitation, the PM expressed his regrets.
