NEW DELHI: If things fall into place, products made by Tihar jail inmates would soon gain global recognition with online sale on Flipkart and Snapdeal. From the paintings made by inmates to bakery products, handloom, furniture, candles and lamps, everything would be available on these e-commerce sites. The step is an initiative by the jail authorities to promote the products.
"The idea to put the products online was proposed recently. We have taken it forward and have exchanged the terms and conditions. We are expecting the products to be available online from next month," said Naveen Kataria, superintendent of jail number II, which houses many of the prison's production unit.
Inmates are excited that their products will reach more people and would be more in demand, Kataria said.
The paintings available on these sites would have the inmates' name. "This will not only make them more confident, but will also give them a little fame in the outside world. The people would get to know how talented these inmates are," Kataria said.
Initially, Tihar jail products were sold only to inmates and their visitors. The store is located outside the jail. Later, the products found their place onthe premises of a few courts and at a kiosk in a south Delhi mall.
The prices of these products would be decided keeping in mind the market competition. "We do not want our products to be overpriced. We want to attract as many customers as possible," an official from the jail said.
