NEW DELHI: Plagued with only filthy Yamuna water reaching their region, hundreds of holy men, residents and farmers of Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan reached the capital on Sunday. They demanded that fresh water, which is diverted through Hathni Kund barrage in Haryana before Yamuna enters Delhi, be released for the Braj region which only gets polluted drain water.

"At Hathni Kund, fresh water is diverted before it enters Delhi. After entering the capital, about 90% of the water is directed to Wazirabad barrage. More than 180 drains empty their filth in the leftover water that reaches villages of Braj. Many water-borne diseases have spread in the Braj region and it is not even fit for irrigation. We are here to appeal to both the central and Delhi governments to take remedial steps," said Ramesh Sisodiya, national general secretary of Yamuna Rakshak Dal.

Assuring the thousands of activists and people, who had marched down to Jantar Mantar seeking political assurance for their 'Save Yamuna' initiative, Delhi environment minister Asim Ahmed Khan said that Aam Aadmi Party was serious about the issue and soon results would be seen. He said that five meetings have been held with chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in this regard.

Khan added that an action plan is underway to clean Yamuna. "Issues relating to the river were in our manifesto and we intend to fulfill it," he said.

The activists said they have four demands on which they want action by the government, the primary one being release of fresh water from Hathni Kund for villages of Braj region. "We also demand all drains that empty into Yamuna be closed. Clean water for irrigation should be released in Agra and Gurgaon canals. Also, we want that Nadi Vikas Aur Ganga Sanrakshan Mantralay be renamed as Nadi Vikas Aur Ganga-Yamuna Sanrakshan Mantralay," Sisodiya added.

Sisodiya said that they have also written to Uma Bharti and are expecting her to join them on Monday. Earlier, they had sent many letters to various political leaders, but no one paid any heed. "This time we will leave only after assurance is given by the Centre and Delhi government that a definite action will be taken in this regard," he added.
