LSR conducts safety audit of areas around college

NEW DELHI: Future students of Lady Shri Ram College will know exactly where it's safe to look for digs. The college's committee against sexual harassment, the Aung San Suu Kyi Centre for Peace and the department of political science, have together conducted a safety audit of the areas around college.

In the first stage, they've covered the areas from LSR to the Moolchand Metro station. Eventually, they'll cover other parts as well.

"The bulk of our students stay as paying guests," says Krishna Menon who teaches political science at the college, "This will help them find out how the neighbourhood is. It also gives them ownership, agency. You're not waiting for someone somewhere to do something."

The team walked through the colonies bearing mobile phones and feeding information into a mobile application called Safetipin. This app helps women keep off spots in the city where harassment is common.

Safetipin furnishes information of a location's performance on a number of parameters—whether it's well-lit, open, deserted or crowded, security arrangements, condition of the pavements, availability of public transport, gender usage and, because women have learnt to trust their instincts in these matters, also "feeling." As per the audit, 80, National Park, Lajpat Nagar feels "uncomfortable."

"We will share this data with the police and the residents' welfare associations of the colonies," says Menon. The "prime target areas" were National Park, Amar Colony, Kailash Colony, Zamrudpur and Greater Kailash Part I, blocks N, W, C and M.

For the first round, they had help from women's rights group, Jagori. "Using it, the students will know where they can stay, where they can go shopping. Women have right to the city too," says Menon. The statement on the audit released at LSR's academic congress on Monday says, "The focus on women's safety often turns into an obsessive concern for the protection of women. WE seek to steer clear of this protectionist discourse and wish to empower women with the confidence to travel and walk, stroll and stand in the streets of Delhi with dignity and assurance."
