Manipuri assistant prof alleges racial abuse

NEW DELHI: A 41-year-old assistant professor from Manipur was physically harassed and verbally abused by three youths in south Delhi's Katwaria Sarai. He even alleged that they passed racial remarks against him. However, before police could reach the perpetrators had fled. The victim had shifted to Delhi in 1992 and teaches in a Delhi University college.

The incident was reported on Sunday around 8.40pm. He said the youths abused him when he went to buy something from the market. When the accused pulled him by the shoulders from behind, he thought his friends were trying to tease him. "One of them held my chin while the other two laughed at me. They called me 'chinky' and 'chowmein'," he said.

One of the accused even dared him to call the PCR and threatened him of dire consequences. The accused were in their mid-20s and had come in a Scorpio to the market. "They seemed in an inebriated condition," he said. He added that no one came to his help when the youths were abusing him.

Police have registered a case under IPC sections 323, 341 and 34 at Vasant Vihar police station.
