Qutub murder case waits as cops probe 170 theft

NEW DELHI: It seems Mehrauli police have neither time nor sufficient manpower to investigate the recent shooting outside Qutub Minar. Almost 48 hours after the sensational incident was reported which prompted the Union home ministry to seek a reply from the city top cop, no arrest has been made so far in this connection. The reason: police are getting bogged down in probing three separate cases of thefts requiring involvement of around a dozen cops.

While one set of criminals had stolen Rs 170 and warned the victim to start keeping more cash in his wallet, the other has made away with four tyres of a car. In the third case, thieves took away three pair of jeans and sports shoes from outside his house. All these incidents took place in areas under Mehrauli police station.

As part of the police commissioner's initiative of free registration of crime, JCP (southeastern range) Vivek Gogia has lodged three FIRs. All three cases were registered under less heinous section of burglary whereas the first case should have been filed under the robbery section. Three teams were formed under additional DCP (south) P S Kushwah to crack the cases.

The first case is being investigated by ASI Daleep Singh and head constable Bhagat Singh. They are looking for two youths who waylaid a Rohini resident near the DJB office in Mehrauli. They took out Rs 170 from his wallet and returned it to him.

In the second case, the victim had parked his car in Maidangarhi area at night but found all four tyres missing the next morning. The case has been assigned to ASI Jitender Singh and head constable Bhagat Singh. In the third case, a woman claimed a few pair of jeans and shoes belonging to her husband that she kept outside her house for drying were stolen. Sub-inspector Gopal Singh and head constable Bodh Priya are handling the case. Even sniffer dogs could be involved to retrieve the stolen goods.

Meanwhile, police claim Qutub shooters have switched off their phones and hence catching them has become a little difficult. There is a theory that these criminals may have fled to Nepal. DCP Prem Nath, who has just returned from the US after submitting the viscera sample in the Sunanda Pushkar case, is now likely to be sent to Kathmandu to track down the shooters.
