NEW DELHI: Delhi Technological University has been directed to nullify the appointment of teachers who did not meet minimum criteria for recruitment, bar the committee members responsible for their selection from participating in such a process in future and stop "all processes initiated by...former VC." The March 4 letter from the Department of Training and Technical Education (DTTE) communicating the Lieutenant Governor's directions is addressed to the new vice-chancellor of DTU.

In March last year, LG Najeeb Jung had constituted a three-member committee headed by former chief secretary of Delhi, R Narayanaswami, to conduct an inquiry into allegations of corruption in a 2012 round of recruitment at DTU. The posts advertised had been for the positions of professor and associate professor. The committee had submitted its report by July, 2014. It had observed that in that round, eligible candidates hadn't been given a chance while several ineligible ones were not only called for interviews but even selected. The former vice chancellor, on whose watch these breaches took place, was sent on leave pending inquiry and has since retired.

The committee had studied the applications of all 38 candidates selected in that round and discovered that seven of them "should not have been called for interviews" at all. Of these seven, five had joined. The team had also randomly selected and studied 50 applications of the 300 rejected ones and found at least three who "ought not to have been rejected." But no action was taken on these findings, or any directions issued, till now.

The letter to the VC - a DTU source confirms they've received a "sealed envelope" but refuses to disclose the nature of its contents - lists out the steps DTU administration will now have to take: "All processes initiated by Shri Sharma, former VC be stopped", "for faculty, who do not meet requirements as mandated under law - action be initiated to reverse the process", "members of committees, who were part of the selection process be barred from further selection committees." It finally says, "A compliance report may be sent to this office immediately for the perusal of...Lt.Governor of Delhi."
