Travel agent dupes couple of Rs 2.5 lakh

NEW DELHI: A couple's honeymoon trip to Bali was ruined when they realized that the agent who had made their reservations in a hotel there had conned and robbed them of Rs 2.5 lakh.

The fraud was discovered when the couple reached Bali and found that their reservation had been cancelled. Apoorv Chadha was duped by one Gopal Pandian, a Bangalore based travel agent, who claimed that he could get cheaper air tickets and hotel bookings for the trip. Chadha had booked a trip five months ahead of his wedding and made a full payment of Rs 2.5 lakh.

He even called up the hotel in Bali to cross check his booking and received a confirmation from their side. .

However, when the couple reached Bali, they couldn't find the hotel valet at the airport. He assumed that there was some confusion and paid for the taxi and reached the hotel. But was taken aback when he was told by the receptionist that his booking had been cancelled and the amount was refunded to the travel agent.

When Chadha called Pandian, he told him that he had booked a better accommodation at a different hotel and directed the couple to another hotel in Bali. When the couple reached the other hotel they discovered that they were cheated again since there was no booking done under their names.

Chadha called up Pandian again and demanded that his money be refunded immediately but the agent made some excuse and hung up the phone. He stopped receiving the victim's calls after that.

Chadha had to borrow money from his friend to book a room for the trip. When he called up Pandian from another number, he promised to deposit the money in his account.

After repeated calls and messages the agent deposited Rs 10,000 in his account and absconded. All his numbers were switched off.

Police have registered a fraud case against the agent and further investigations are underway.
