Traffic came to a halt at ITO, Barakhamba Road, Ranjeet Singh Road, Asaf Ali Road, DB Gupta Road and Paharganj by evening. The situation became worse after the tail back of the jams stretched till the Connaught Place and India Gate which was already heavy due to the peak hour traffic.
By 6pm snarls were reported and traffic officials said that they had deployed additional personnel in these areas to clear the traffic mess but the huge number of vehicles led to a gridlock at the major intersections.

Police said that efforts were being made to remove the protesters from the arterial stretches. "The district police have asked to ensure passage of vehicles heading towards north Delhi so that the back log can be eased out," said a traffic police officer.
The incident took place around 11.30pm when the victim, identified as Shahnawaz (38), was returning home from a wedding on his motorcycle along with his two children Fahad (13) and Kaif (9).
As they reached Turkman Gate, the bike hit an i-20 car, which had 5 occupants, police said.
An argument ensued between the occupants of the car and the motorcyclist which soon took an ugly turn with Shahnawaz beaten up badly. He was later taken to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead, police said.
"The case is of road rage but personal enmity is being probed. One of the accused, Waseem (24), has been arrested. All of them have been identified and are locals of the same area. Allegations of locals against police are also being 'looked at'," said Delhi top cop BS Bassi.
