Traffic police data shows that DTC buses had killed more than 40 people in 2014 and this earned them the notoriety of going the "Blueline" way. Officials said cases of traffic rule violation are constantly rising and over-speeding by DTC drivers, despite speed governors in the buses, is a common complaint. This year, 10 people have already been killed by speeding buses. More than 100 DTC buses have been impounded for grave violations in 2015.
"We have been receiving complaints about every kind of violation by DTC buses and are seriously concerned about the way they are running on roads," said Muktesh Chander, special commissioner, traffic.
Often these buses are found parked in the middle of the road despite clear marking near the bus stops. They also violate stop lines and bus lanes very frequently. The traffic police have written to the PWD to redraw these lines for better visibility.
On March 24, the traffic police had to divert the route of a Union minister after a DTC bus breakdown at the Mother Teresa Crescent led to a huge traffic snarl on the stretch. Police officials said they have decided to warn the DTC officials about these repeated violations and will lunch a concerted drive to nab errant drivers.
In fact, a traffic police data shows that this year, nearly 40% of the commercial vehicles challaned for over-speeding were found to be DTC buses. Errant bus drivers were slapped a fine of Rs 2,000, said officials.
